Spring 2014 Anime Preview

The Spring 2014 anime season is soon to be upon us and with it a slew of new anime titles.  Whether or not they will meet your fancy is up for debate, but to make your decisions easier we have run through the list (care of anichart.net) and given our impressions as well as collected some PVs for your viewing pleasure.  If you missed it, be sure to check out our podcast impressions we did that covers our most anticipated titles from the list.

Be sure to check back with us during the season’s beginning as we will be writing first impressions on a lot of what you see here.  We will also be compiling a schedule listing on where you can find each of these shows on sites that support the producers.

Abarenbou Kishi!! Matsutarou

Studio: Toei Animation – Genre: Shounen, Sports
A show following the rise of Matsutarou Sakaguchi, a giant rough neck man with strength far beyond any man. It’s typical sports related show taking the perspective of a sumo wrestler, but said to have a protagonist that doesn’t act like a normal protagonist would. I have little interest in this, as I’m not a fan of this style of anime, but if you’re a fan of the style, it has a good studio behind it.

Akuma no Riddle

Studio: Diomedea – Genre: Action, School, Yuri
Set at a private girls’ boarding school, it features 12 assassins targeting one girl, but one of the assassins begins to have feelings for that target. Typical school setting, typical unrealistic plot, and a shoed in yuri element that seems common these days. Nothing here that has my interest.

Atelier Escha & Logy

Studio: Studio Gokumi – Genre: Fantasy, Video Game
Based off the recent JRPG release, this anime follows the story of Escha and Logy as they assist with the development project of the home of Escha.

I recently reviewed the game for GamingUnion.net and sadly found the chemistry between the characters to be lackluster. Mix in the usual shallow plotline and you have an anime that I have little hope for. While the game had addictive and fantastic gameplay, that sadly does not transfer to a show (obviously). I’ll snoop at it, but have little hope for it.

Baby Steps

Studio: Studio Pierrot – Genre: Sports
Another go at the world of tennis by anime. This one follows Maruo Eiitirou (E-Chan) as he decides to pick up the game of Tennis. Once again, not my cup of tea. But for fans of shows like Prince of Tennis, there may be something here.

Black Bullet

Studio: Kinema Citrus – Genre: Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Seinen
Future world where mankind is defeated by viral parasites named Gastrea. A boy name Rentaro joins the Civil Security organization to fight against the Gastrea. One day they are tasked with preventing the destruction of Tokyo. While this title looks somewhat interesting and dark, I have a feeling it may be a bit cliché for my taste. Will be checking it out though.

Blade & Soul

Studio: Gonzo – Genre: Action, Shounen, Martial Arts, Fantasy
An anime adaptation of the Korean fantasy/martial-arts MMORPG “Blade and Soul”. Little to no hope for this title, it seems like a CG-fest that I’m not a fan of.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

Studio: Brains Base – Genre: Comedy, School, Romance, Slice of Life
Usa moves into an apartment with a perverted roommate who’s obsessed with underaged girls as well as a girl that he finds to be a love-at-first-sight. Romance comedy, not sure if I’ll care for it due to a typical school setting. However I may give it a shot. It’s got some good people behind it.

Break Blade

Studio: Production I.G – Genre: Action, Fantasy, Mecha, Shounen, Military
A world filled with war. While the citizens are able to use quartz (Mechs?) for whatever needs they have, Rygart Arrow is an unable to. However this characteristic will enable him to pilot an ancient Golem, one strong enough to put up a fight against the invading army. This is a 12 episode adaptation of the 6 series of movies already released before.  While I’m not a fan of mecha, this show has a gritty look to it that has my interest. Plus the protagonist looks like Ichigo from Bleach, which is comical.

Captain Earth

Studio: Bones – Genre: Sci-Fi, Mecha
After encountering memories of his father’s mysterious death as well as an odd young boy and girl, a boy is drawn to a building housing a mecha. Just as an alien invasion is beginning, he’s asked by a nearby soldier if he’s a pilot. Typical child pilots save the world setting, I have no interesting in this spitting image of Gundam meets savior children. Though with a good studio behind it, some may find a gem here.

Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita

Studio: Feel – Genre: Comedy, Seinen
A high school girl is asked to become the idol of her town by request of her uncle, only to do not-so stellar appearances at local shopping centers and get gigs for local low-budget television. While I’ve yet to see a ‘good’ idol show, this sounds like a somewhat interesting premise. Will be checking it out.

Nice follow up to the podcasts. What is going on with Break Blade, is this a re-release of Broken Blade or a sequel that was simply showing old footage? it looks like the same show.

I wasn’t even aware it was a movie series! Yes, it appears the 6 movies series is being adapted into this 12 episode TV series. So it should be the same thing with added scenes. That sort of has me a bit more interested in it..

Thanks for the heads up Neowned, I’ll update the post to reflect that.
