Episode 1 Impressions: Nanana’s Buried Treasure

e1nananahdr

A cute NEET ghost with a bundle of treasure hidden somewhere on an island. Who wouldn’t want to be bunked up with such a character? Apparently Yama Juugo. Thus opens the world of Nanana’s Buried Treasure and the insanity that will follow.

Synopsis
e1nanana4The island of Nanaejima, or Nanae Island Special Student Zone, is an interesting place.  Created in the midst of the Pacific Ocean by a genius group of students called the Great 7.  It’s seemingly a haven for students, housing 21 schools of many grades as well as state of the art research facilities.  Such a task with no sponsorship would be impossible, but the leader Nanana set out to find treasure to make their dream a reality.  Eventually finding a treasure of unknown origins.  Some claim that her treasures measured from hundreds of billion to even trillions of yen.

Unfortunately, while the island was created, Nanana was murdered in her room by a stab wound to the back.  Since that day 10 years ago, her ghost remains in the room trapped for some unknown reason.  Possibly seeking the identity of the one who murdered her, or perhaps to pass on the treasure that she may only know it’s location.

Yama Juugo is a student that has been exiled by his own father.  Equipped with only enough money to down pay his new apartment, he heads to Nanaejima Island to get on with his new life.  Once there, he meets the manager of Happy House named Maboro Shiki.  She takes a non refundable 1 year down payment on a room and is escorted to what ends up being the room that Nanana is trapped in.  While he claims there was a mistake, Maboro knowingly admits the presence of a ghost and offers no refund.

e1nanana3Stuck with the room, Juugo decides to attempt to access his new living condition.  While talking to Nanana, he establishes that she can’t leave or pass on to the afterlife.  As well as the fact that she plays internet games day and night and can only eat pudding.

The next day at school, Juugo meets class officer Yumeji Yurika who is asked to escort him throughout the school.  She seems to find him attractive though she blushes at the thought of him knowing.  She also enjoys writing down great quotes as she aspires to write a novel.

Back at home, Juugo begins to get frustrated by his predicament.  Late night game playing keeping him up, trips to the store to restore Nanana’s pudding supply, and no peace and quiet.  As he hides away in the bathroom and decides to get caught up on his phone, 2 hours pass by and a timed trap door opens up near the seat.

Inside this trap door is a notebook written by Konjou Kasumi.  It asks that the one who reads that book to take care of Nanana.  That she’s a lonely child just as she was 10 years ago when she was murdered.  It also lists her favorite things including pudding.  Even though the notebook claims they will end up seeking him out, it states that anyone seeking her treasure to find the Adventure Club at Third High School.

Thoughts
e1nanana7Great episode to start the series.  It was quite an information dump but most everything was fairly interesting stuff.  The world they built was good and fleshed out.  I also enjoyed Nanana much more than I thought I would.  Hearing her tragic story was fairly sad and it felt a lot more deep than I had assumed.  She’s also quite the character.

I enjoyed the visual style used.  Very colorful and lively.  Though I did feel they got a bit excessive with the CG.  Thankfully it blended well with the rest of the animation (aside from the cave trap scene).

The stage has been set, I’m just curious where they take it from here.  A treasure hunt per episode?  Or will it get more into the history of Nanana and her tragic end?  Stay tuned for more episode impressions.
