Episode 5 Impressions: Aldnoah Zero

While we have seen Slaine’s devotion to the Princess of Vers through his determination to rescue her while she’s stranded on Earth, his reasoning has always been placed simply on his interactions with her aboard the shuttle. Luckily with some flashbacks and insider viewing, we’re soon to get much more.

e5aldnoahzero1Synopsis
During a quick flashback sequence, we catch a glimpse of when Slaine was once ejected into a nearby building. When he breaks free from his capsule, it seems whatever device he was in was filled with a liquid. A liquid that he’s unable to remove from his lungs. Luckily, a blonde haired girl rushes to the scene and begins drawing the liquid from his mouth and thus saves his life. A girl who turns out to be the princess of Vers.

Back at the present time it seems that Rayregalia Vers Rayvers, emperor of the Vers Empire, is quite unhappy to hear that the Orbital Knights have opened a full-scale war on the United Earth. Despite knowledge of his grand daughter’s death, he feels that the move was far to rash. He issues an armistice declaration to the UE and commands his men to investigate the assassination. Though the Orbital Knights are infuriated by this decision, some wanting to push their original plan to destroy the UE and others seeking blind revenge.

Back on the vessel carrying what seems like mankind’s last hope, Inaho receives commendation for his efforts against the blade wielding knight. However celebrations are cut short as the knight returns for his revenge despite the call for a cease-fire by his emperor.

e5aldnoahzero6Thoughts
While this episode wasn’t as heavy on the action as previous, it was a gigantic morsel of developments.  It was really great to finally see some insight into the Vers Empire and it’s workings.  While I was a bit sad to see it take a direction that it did, that’s not to say it wasn’t an interesting one.

I’m still holding hope that Count Cruhteo is still a solid man deep down.  While he’s been caught up in the revenge plot, I wouldn’t put it past him to turn on the other Orbital Knights if he discovers the assassination plots that are going on.  Though the Emperor’s stance in the end will only create more conflict.

That is because of Saazbaum’s influence and sheer web that he has placed down.  Which is really intriguing.  I was surprised to see just how important Trillram’s death ended up being.  It’s obvious that no death in this show is for episodic overcoming.  It has definitely webbed into Slaine’s progression and I’m interested to see what Saazbaum’s comment about this doctor with Slaine’s family name will be all about.
