Episode 1 Impressions: CROSS ANGE Rondo of Angel and Dragon

It always seems like every utopia is anything but perfect. Always having some sort of issue that would make you question their title. Such is the case for the kingdom of Misurugi.

e1crossange6Synopsis
Princess Angelize Ikaruga is loved by her kingdom. Taking an active role in society and even competing in sports. It’s a wonderful kingdom by appearance, built from the ground up by the use of mana.

However, under the glamour is a dark truth. People who can’t use mana are known as Norma, and can actually destroy mana. People fear them and the dangers they pose, so they are immediately exiled.

During Angelize’s baptismal service to gain the crown, the system reads her as being a Norma. Turns out Angelize’s father and mother had been keeping her identity as a Norma a secret. Even tricking the system. However her brother had removed that ruse and thus took the opportunity to claim the throne.

e1crossange10After attempting to flee, Angelize’s mother is shot and killed and Angelize is taken into custody. Though a jail would be too convenient for a Norma, so she is instead taken to an island where other Norma are kept.

She’s beaten, stripped of her possessions, humiliated, and of course removed from her status as a princess.

Thoughts
Well, this one is definitely a hard one to make a decision on. Mainly because this show is just all over the place. Starting out the show we got some terrible CG and lackluster combat sequences with more butt than content.

Following this, we dive into some pretty solid world building with almost a hurtful sting under its surface.  Watching the brainwashed society exile an infant, watching the princess get ripped out of office.  It was all really good and I wanted more.

e1crossange12However that’s when the show goes downhill.  While it takes the dark tone to a whole new level, the last remaining minutes and remembering the first minutes, I begin to wonder just what this show plans on being.  A mecha?  Overcoming a world of segregation?  Or.. whatever that was in that last few seconds of the show?

So it’s hard to say.  If this show becomes 80% mecha, 10% sexual harassment, 3% story, and 7% creepy brother king incest, then it’s garbage.  Which sadly, based on the intro and outro, it’s what the studio wants me to believe.

I’m going to give this show some time.  If it can tap into that story and feel of the first episode, it surely can be a good show.

This show is streaming on Crunchyroll.com!
