Episode 1 Impressions: Gugure! Kokkuri-san

Three meals a day and 50 different ingredients. Three meals a day and 50 different ingredients! That’s the motto of Kokkuri, a fox ghost who seeks to haunt a girl who performed a ritual incorrectly.  Except his heart is melted after he notices the state in which she lives in.

e1kokkuri2Synopsis
Ichimatsu Kohina is an adorable little girl, claiming to be a bioengineered doll with no desire for friends and typical needs of a child. Surviving alone in her home with no parents and eating only her beloved cup roman.

Though for some unknown reason, something she won’t say, she plays a game that most kids play. Asking questions of a spirit named Kokkuri while putting an index finger on a coin. However it’s never meant to be played alone as it will bring a spirit to haunt you. This spirit is the Fox Ghost known as Kokkuri.

e1kokkuri3However when he arrives, she quickly dismisses him, locking him out and stabbing his eyes with salt. Over time, he learns that she eats nothing nutritious, but rather noodles day and night. Kokkuri finds this appalling and instead cooks for her and tries to take care of her. Though her dark and gloomy attitude is often too much for him to take.

Thoughts
This show, is absolutely, positively, great! I could not stop laughing throughout the episode. Just seeing and hearing Kokkuri’s reaction to Kohina’s lifestyle was priceless. Both playing off each other’s faults to a hilarious extent.

e1kokkuri11I’m also really loving the fact that they chose to cast Daisuke Ono to play as Kokkuri. Coming off of watching Barakamon, which he voiced Handa, this voice completely fits and captures that frustration perfectly. He’s a great voice.

Watching Kohina close the window on him, ask him to leave money for it, hide the dropped cup of noodles, call the police on Kokkuri; everything was just priceless gold and I cannot recommend this show enough. Go watch it!
