Episode 1 Impressions: Orenchi no Furo Jijo

Based off a four-panel manga, this short is sure to get all of the yaoi fans excited. A dashingly handsome merman stuck in the only bathtub in the house. It’s begging for some inappropriate fanart!

e1orenchinofurojijo3Synopsis
Tatsumi is a high schooler who lives by himself in an apartment. One day while walking near the lakeside, he comes across a man who was collapsed on the waterfront. Trying to take him to his apartment nearby, he soon discovers that the man he rescued was in fact a merman.

Thanks to some bad trash handling by the locals, the merman named Wakasa was driven from his home near the dam. Now in Tatsumi’s bathtub, he finds himself unwilling to leave. Rather he feels more inclined to enjoy the wonderful luxury that he has now found.

The only problem with his extended stay is that it is a lot of trouble for Tatsumi who has to wait on him.. and bath with him.

Thoughts
e1orenchinofurojijo4Unfortunately this episode offered little to nothing in ways of entertainment. It has 2 elements stacked against it: First off, it’s a short that consists of about 4 minutes of air time; Secondly, they stuck to just introducing the circumstances of the two characters and how they met.

This show might end up being another case where a studio tries to do story and build in a short environment.  It just doesn’t play well as there’s so little time and too large a gap between episodes to really connect with the audience.  I hope this episode stays strictly an oddity, otherwise the rest of the show will suffer.  With it being from a 4-panel manga, I’m not sure what story would be there.  Though the intro does set a certain tone.

I am a bit curious as to if this show is another attempt to test the waters (no pun intended) on yaoi and its reception. Rather I’m just curious if that is the direction the show is going to take. Either way, it’s a short and has little investment. But again, this episode had nothing really to offer.

This show is streaming on Crunchyroll.com!
