48) Anti-Piracy and Bad Press

There’s been a lot of legislation being passed in Japan recently that has some sort of effect on Anime and Manga. While we try to stray from controversial subjects, it’s hard to ignore the advert effects that these have with the anime world. So join us as we discuss these two topics and dive into the details.

Our first subject is on Japan’s crackdown on piracy of Anime and Manga. What it involves, how it could affect you, what you can do in response, and of course our opinions on the matter.

The other subject is on CNN’s recent coverage of manga in response to the recent law passed to punish the possession of child pornography. We take a listen in on the audio for the video and break down the sheer large amount of false information it provides. As well as refute the incorrect image it paints on the anime culture.

It’s important to note that the second segment of this episode includes some tough subject manner involving child pornography, child abuse, murder, and other content that may not be suitable for all audiences. While we do not get graphic with the discussion, we of course like to let our listeners know.

One thing that jumped out at me about the CNN segment (report is too dignified a term) the guy's opening remark . Basically he seemed to be broad-brushing an entire people as sexually depraved. It struck me as racist.

Interesting that they were blurring out stuff that didn't need blurring. With the overall disingenuous tone of the piece, it allows the viewer to infer the worst case scenario. Jimmy Kimmell plays this for laughs, but for a news outlet to do it is irresponsible.

You guys did a great job handling such a difficult subject. I might use some of the podcast to help educate some of my close minded friends and family.

It really did feel rather racist to me as well. "On the streets of Tokyo, Sex Sells!" Just the sheer amount of political finger pointing that never helps America's image of being high horse. It's rather annoying.

Hah, can't believe Jimmy Kimmell snatched that idea. Seen those type of videos on Youtube for some time.

Appreciate the kind words Cornjob. We were a bit late on the subject just because we don't like getting into controversial stuff, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive here and on Twitter. It definitely helped us see that this type of informative stuff is important to cover and clarify for people. Especially for the sake of arming others with the tools they need to fix what could possibly be a terrible image placed on anime.

Hi, guys! I just wanted to say this episode was really interesting and it is wonderful that you guys are courageous enough to bring up this kind of controversy subject on your podcast.
I know pirating is bad, but like you said in the podcast, I can not just say like they are bad people. Because there might some people saying they don't have that much money to spend on anime. I understand how they feel. I don't think everything is going to be change all at once even though Japanese government made the law.
But your efforts will definitely encourage the Japanese anime/ manga industry so that they can provide you even more amazing shows that you can enjoy :)

As a Japanese, I'd be happy if you could help us to make something you love.

I'm answering a question from Chris in the last episode about child porn industry in Tokyo on another thread called ~Answers from Jun~.Please check that thread as well if you are interested ;)

I think the one problem is that yes there is a porn industry for anime, but that doesn't make all anime porn . Just like how all movies aren't porn just because there is a sexual scene in it, not all anime is hentai. The problem im seeing is that for america young children are young children since to us anything under 18 is considered the no-no territory. What the news and most Americans seem to not realize is that japan has a different culture than us. If I remember right, you guys said the age of consent in japan is 13 , to us as Americans that seems wrong because ours is so much higher.

If were going to use there literature as a way of profit in our country we need to; A. Make rules and regulations to regulate what we allow into the states or B. accept them as a different culture and view what they have to offer as different but at the same time acceptable because its from somewhere foreign. We should focus more on what America is doing before we start trying to fix what other places are doing and what they are distributing, cause we're pretty sick ourselfs. Japan is fighting the whole child pornography issue and we should let them settle there own issues with it.

One last thing, the whole "Anime leads to violence" debate is just stupid. Blaming someones actions based off of whats he or shes hobbies are is ridiculous. Sometimes people are just sick and violent, and it only takes them so long to crack. in all honesty if they do something violent from an anime, even if it wasn't there they would have just come up with another way to do said crime.

Now you just have to start a rally to ban anything and everything that has scantily clad women. Like Dragon's Crown.
