Postby 42Otaku » Thu Feb 14, 2019 4:42 pm

So while I am new to connecting with the otaku community; I have been watching anime avidly for about 5 or 6 years now. Thanks to the host and hands behind the show. よろしくお願いします(yoroshikuonegaishimasu).

P.S. the Japanese (日本語) is no where near where I want it to be but it is an active passion of mine so plz forgive me if I go back and forth.

Hey there, 42 (Is that OK as an abbreviated handle?),

Welcome to the community of radiant positivity towards anime. For the most part, anyway (We all have our hang-ups ;)). We're all here to enjoy our Chinese cartoons the best way we know how. For instance, I'm the resident 'dub guy' (I only watch English- or occasionally German-dubbed series).

As fullmetal-senpai said, feel free to talk however you like. Just don't expect everyone to understand Kanji (I literally have zero understanding of it, I'm afraid) :P.

Maybe you could give us some basic info about yourself. Divulge as much or as little as you please, of course. For example:

- Age and gender (It does help frame an understanding of why you might like or dislike certain types of show)?
- What are your favorite genres?
- How do you watch anime? As in, which shows do you pick, and where (on what device) and when do you watch them?
- Do you have other people to geek out over animes with?

I'll also add - as per tradition - a completely random question to you as a new forum member.
Generating question...
...
...
Do you enjoy animals who can talk or have internal monolog in anime? Maybe you have an example or two to share?

As a last point, I'd be happy if you'd check out my forum game - there's a link in my signature. The idea is to rummage through your mental repertoire of anime characters and find one with shared characteristics to the character presented by the "judge." If it looks like you might enjoy it, please don't hesitate to add a post!

ありがと! (Arigato)~Thanks! For the welcomes and acceptance of my oddities :D

42 is just fine it is the answer to life, the universe, and everything ;) . I am not one to really care what folk call me (I use the tag F@ T at work) so feel free to be creative.

I am 29 and Male.
As far a genres go really I watch about anything but I definitely gravitate to rom/com, harems, ecchi, slice of life, and fantasy. Gundam/Mecha I an not sure how to describe but I like stories with Mecha but not Necessarily about the Mecha. I do like darker animes when the stories great but I try to limit my consumption due to the mental state watching week to week can put me in. I don't particularly care for sports anime but also have not watched many to feel that I can properly judge it I just don't particularly get into sports in general.
I primary watch through my Roku using VRV and Funimation, Netflix, and Amazon. I will also watch on my phone but I have not Amazon on my phone. As far as choosing up til now it's been mostly synopsis and title art, or if I discovered a second season I'd go find the first and watch it on the assumption of they would not make a second season if the first didn't make money. But mostly I'd just watch the first 3-5 of everything coming across crunchy roll/vrv (though I just got the Roku so it was pretty much crunchy roll until Christmas). And just seeing what I ran out of time for. My original dive into anime came from a couple co-workers at the time which heavily influenced my early watching with things like Rosario+Vampire, My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute, Infinite Stratos, Full Metal Alchemist, and Elfen Lied.
I rarely get to talk to my anime senpai (Seniors) but have recently found 2 Kouhai(Juniors) at work; though one is a mostly Manga reader and I just started into that world, but both are part time so it's a very limited geek out. I have a couple other friends who aren't opposed to anime but are not super likly to find time to watch unless it's on the level of SAO or Shingeki (Attack) so I definitely could use some more geeking.

Talking animals is something I never really gave much thought on though I do like Happy and all the Exceed in Fairytale of they count though if I picked one to keep it'd be Frosch.
I am blanking for any specific situations where I thought it hurt the situation at hand so it's definitely not something that's bothered me. I do also like Demi-Chan including the show [Demi-chan wa Kataritai] (sry can't think of the English title atm though it's literally "Discussing Demi-Chan" or "Narrating Demi-Chan")

Welcome to the forum, I also saw you joined the discord, good on you.
I'm also learning japanese at the moment, I have a girlfriend in japan so I've been learning for a little over half a year and should be moving to japan to live with her next year.

Hope you enjoy your time here, from the way you describe the way you watch things it doesn't sound like you're a seasonal watcher, if that's wrong then please correct me.

But yer do try to post as much as you can, make sure you're talking to people and being part of the community, if you want you can join our community watch-along rub by me. We're right in the middle of one so I'd understand if you were too busy to catch up and then match our pace of 1 episode a day. But if you can feel free to take part, it's pinned in the anime discussion section and we're doing Gurren Laggan at the moment. This is also the best way you're gonna be able to talk to people who are watching a show at the same time outside of seasonal viewing.

If you are too busy then I hope you'll stick around and be able to take part in the next one, as soon as a watch-along is finished it's not too long before another starts. Anyway, welcome and I hope you have a good time here.
Feels silly that I even have to say this but I feel I have to. Literally everything I say is just my opinion.

And that is friggin awesome that you are going to move there. I am learning entirly for the sake of learning I know no one who speaks Japanese except the local sushi chefs. I am working on going back to get my bachelor's degree so I hopefully do a English Abroad or something of the type cause my life goal right now is to go live there for at least a year.

Oh quite the contrary. I have been watching current pretty much since I got crunchy roll maybe a little before. Like for a good time perspective i think I have been watching anime for about as long as crunchy roll has been a legit distributor, like I remember friends having the it sucks but it supports what we love and we all switched to crunchy roll lol.

But yeah I am keeping up with Radiant, SAO Alicization, SLIME, Date-A-Live III, Yakusoku No Neverland, Kaguya-sama, DomeXKano, Tate no Yuusha (Shield Hero), Endro!, Dororo, Mob, Black Clover, etc. Though I some of then I'll let back up 2 or 3 eps so I can binge a bit. But until now every season I went in blind to pretty much everything crunchy rolled dropped.

And yeah I'll definitely check that out. I've started it a time or two VRV says Im on ep 7 ;)

I do love me some Hitchhiker's, so this'll work for me just fine ;).

Looks like we've got a decent bit of genre preference overlap going. I enjoy romance and comedy series a lot, although my favorite overall is probably drama (which is frequently combined with the above two). Slice of life is usually great for me, and I can take or leave harem and ecchi elements - they're usually serviceable to me.
I'm absolutely not a fan of fantasy settings, though :P. For me, it's either realism or soft sci-fi all the way. And I generally dislike action-heavy animes, which naturally includes most mecha series (unless they focus strongly on some other genre(s) like Gargantua on the Verdurous Planet or Darling in the FranXX).
I'm always down for some dark stories with depressing atmospheres, so long as they're not too action-heavy.
And as for sports animes, I think those are a bit of an acquired taste. I loved Bamboo Blade, but that's mainly for the characters and comedy. Harukana Receive was fun because I play volleyball myself, so I could relate to it on a more personal level (Still waiting to watch Haikyu). Overall, however, I'm not particularly into sports shows, either.

If you're watching seasonal stuff, you should have the opportunity to chat about some of the airing shows in the Season Discussion subforum. Myself, I've never gotten the appeal of watching anime 1 episode per week. I watch one show from start to finish before starting the next one.

Looks like you had quite a gamut of genres covered by your gateway animes :). I used to watch DragonBall Z, Case Closed, and Ranma 1/2 on TV as a kid, and Ranma is the one that got me into actively watching anime (thereby already fostering my love for romance and comedy). Furthering that angle, I watched Maison Ikkoku, Love Hina, and pretty much went from there.

Like you, I only have a couple of friends and acquaintances (and 2 colleagues at the office) who watch anime very occasionally. It's always a bit depressing when my friends and I are sitting together, the topic of conversation switches to anime, and all they talk about is One Piece :|. But at least I've found some like-minded geeks on this forum as well as the Animedubs subreddit.

The title you're looking for is Interviews with Monster Girls. As a huge fan of English dubs, I generally remember animes by their English names, though some of the more popular Japanese titles also stick with me (mainly because you hear them used so often in the fandom).
By the way, while I absolutely adore Monster Girls (one of my biggest surprise hits in recent years), I don't quite think its characters qualify for my question :P. But that's no biggie. I guess the question popped into my head because I've recently seen Tada Never Falls in Love, which had a cat (Nyanko BIG) entertaining very elaborate internal monolog.

That's also fine, I feel like most people learn for that reason and obviously that's why I first started learning but I've ramped up how much time I spend on it once my girlfriend went back to japan and I had to really buckle down so I can be good enough to get work there, I'll most likely end up teaching English, they're pretty much always in high demand.

Ah okay awesome, that was just an assumption I was making after all, which I tend to not like unless I'm asking for clarification like in this case. But I'm also glad you seem to only watch anime legally, I'm really big on making sure I do the same, I won't hate or attack anyone who doesn't use legal means but I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me.

Awesome, It's just me and BlueSpark so far, so some more dynamics added to the conversations would be a lot of fun, of course if you're unable too don't sweat it too much, there's always going to more watch alongs as long as I'm here.
