What novels are you reading?

Postby Ukkihsog » Wed Feb 05, 2020 3:27 pm

I created this because i couldn't find this type of section. Cuz posting inside manga novels just felt wrong. ::sigh::

novels which i think are valid for this type are those which are influenced by japanese culture or is based in japan

Currently reading
  • The Villainous Daughter's Butler
  • Konosuba
  • The Other side of the last boss
  • Kuro no Maou
  • Nigotta Hitomi no Lilianne
  • Itai no wa Iya nanode Bogyo-Ryoku ni...
  • A demon lord's take
  • The simple job of only perishing to the hero
  • Monster no Goshujin-sama
  • Jujutsushi
  • Running away from the hero (remake)
  • Danmachi book 10
  • Tsuki ga michibiku isekai douchuu
  • To be a power in the shadows
  • The devil evolution catalog
  • Tilea's Worries
  • The Death mage doesn't want a 4 time

Why so many because chapters for some of the works comes out only once per week/month

Books i suggest to check
Comedy
  1. Running away from the hero (remake)
  2. Tilea's Worries
  3. To be a power in the shadows
Interesting concept
  1. The simple job of only perishing to the hero
  2. The devil evolution catalog
  3. Nigotta Hitomi no Lilianne
  4. The Death mage doesn't want a 4 time

going between dark and light (i mean from killing and losing friends to some comedy moments)
  • Kuro no Maou
  • Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni kateru to omou na

Amazing
  • Dungeon Defense

Unfortunately, I'm really not much of a reader, and I've never touched a light novel before. I have read a small bunch of visual novels, though. Are you into those?

Well, VNs are sort of a different beast, what with the first-person perspective, the animated characters, the music playing in the background... quite a number of factors that differentiate them from traditional (light) novels. So I don't blame you for enjoying one, but not the other.

I didn't have any interest to get into visual novels for the longest time. But then I listened to a bunch of very well put-together VN reviews on YouTube and decided to give it a try. Given how I'm a huge fan of high-school romance dramas, there are plenty of visual novels out there catering to my taste.

The first one I ever read - which has served as the introductory title for many VN fans - is Katawa Shoujo. It's completely free to download and magnificently put together in my humble opinion. It's clearly a passion project by a group of (international, not Japanese) hobby artists and developers, clocks in at a 100% completion time of 30-36 hours (depending on your reading speed), and has some amazing life lessons to offer.
Also H-scenes. I felt very apprehensive about the erotic content going into it, feeling uncomfortable with the idea. But to my surprise it did not feel like porn, instead (mainly) enhancing the emotional bonds between the characters. The writing style is very pleasing, assuming a literary / slightly poetic tone without being over the top. In short, Katawa Shoujo is the first VN I would recommend to anyone looking to dip their feet into the medium (Unless, of course, you outright don't care for romantic-drama fiction at all).

The only other truly noteworthy title I'd mention is The Fruit of Grisaia. A marvelous comedy-turned-dark-drama with 5 routes, an extremely high-register vocabulary (courtesy of the localization work of Sekai Project), and a whopping 120 hours of completion time (at least that's how long it took me). That's way too long to recommend for anyone's first visual novel, though - especially as there are 2 follow-up VNs to round out the Grisaia trilogy.

Well, I haven't seen the anime adaptation, seeing how it hasn't been dubbed. But from what I've read, it only scratches the very surface of the VN's content. So if you're at least slightly intrigued by the characters and the general setup, it might be worth it to acquire the visual novel. Just beware, as I said, of the extreme length. It's going to eat up dozens of hours of your time if you want to experience all 5 routes.

Oh, and as a heads-up, there is an 18+ version with H-scenes, but I played the censored Steam version, and it worked perfectly fine for me. In fact, I think raunchy erotic scenes would only hurt the experience (and that's also what that YouTube reviewer whom I mentioned said), but that's just my estimation.

For me visual novels are hard to read because you feel how slow the time passes that's why i pick light/web/chinese/korean novels

I bought it "classroom of the elite" but still waiting for more because if its as good or better than anime i would want more and i current only have 3 books with me.

I really suggest you to try reading LN because for me in a lot of cases it was better than anime version of it ::target::

Hmm ok. I think maybe I'll start "Dungeon Defense" since it is the only one in your "Amazing" catagory. And while we're at it your should check out "Solo Leveling" xD It's the best thing ever and I dont think its possible to over hype it.

Where do you get your LN from?
