Winter 2013 Anime Preview

It’s that time again.  The new season of anime.  To start us off, here’s a list of the current anime in the Winter season for 2013 and what we’re looking forward to.  Be sure to check our podcast for regular early thoughts and reviews of each series as we go along!

D-Frag! (Brains Base)- This looks to be a harem style show.  A group of trouble makers find a group of girls that are even bigger trouble makers.  Sounds like it could make for quite an interesting and amusing hijynx.  However I’m not expecting a lot out of this show to be perfectly honest.

Go! Go! 575 – This show seems to be an adaptation of a Vita game based on making your own haiku.  Slice of life and music related.  I’m expecting a school life musical club.  Suffice to say, not expecting much.

Hamatora the Animation – This story follows a group of people who have special powers, called minimum or minor miracles.  Looks to be interesting.

Hoozuki no Reitetsu (Wit Studio)- This looks to be an artistic show.  The main protagonist is an aide to the King of Hell.  Who has a soft side for cute animals.  Don’t let that fool you as he apparently has a super sadistic side.  Definitely has my interest.

Inari KonKon Koi Iroha (Production IMS)- Romance centered around a girl who has been given the ability to change form.  Not expecting a lot from this show but it definitely sounds cute.

Mahou Sensou (Madhouse Studios)- A fantasy based around a young boy that finds himself turned into magician.  After finding a magician collapsed on his school grounds.  This sounds somewhat interesting.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei (Dogakobo)- I am guessing this is a rom-com centered around a girl turning 16 and finding out that she is in an arranged marriage.  After which she has to move in with the husband in question along with his sister.  Not expecting much from this but it could turn out cute.

Nisekoi (Shaft)- At face value this looks to be a hilarious rom-com.  With Shaft behind it, we can expect a decent telling of the story.  The concept behind this show is a young man with a locket that pairs with childhood friends.  After being separated from her, he looks forward to a romantic reunion with her.  His hopes are dashed when he’s kicked in the face by a girl from a rival family’s gang.  From there, everything gets crazy.  It seems he gets caught up in his family’s affairs and how has to marry the girl who he finds has the matching pendant. I’m definitely looking forward to this show.

Nobunagun (Bridge)- Of the shows this season, this has to be one of my most anticipated.  A girl goes to Taiwan on a school trip and is attacked by monsters.  The girl finds out that she has the spirit of Oda Nobunaga and awakens an e-gene holder that wields weapons infused with spirits of historic figures.  As I stated, I’m very excited about this show and can’t wait to see if it can live up to the potential.

Noragami (Bones)- The story behind this show seems to revolve around a girl who is being bullied.  One day she finds a phone number and a note on the bathroom wall saying “I solve your troubles.”  She calls the number and finds that the person is a man who calls himself a god and kills spirits that pass into the next world.  Though this story seems a little vague, Bones is not a studio to ignore.  The PV looks nice so I expect a decent show.

Nourin (Silver Link)- A rom-com based around a boy finding that his favorite idol has retired and coming to his school.  Not expecting a lot from this show, but definitely looks cute.

Oneechan ga Kita (C2C)- 13-year-old boy gains a big sister that has an overwhelming affection for him. Looks like a bro/siscon.  Not too interested but I will check it out.  Not going out of my way however.

Saikin, Imouto no Yousu ga Chotto Okashiinda ga – Another bro/siscon with a supernatural twist.  A spirit has to possess the sister of the boy she must fall in love with to move on to heaven.  This one has a more convoluted story and has a bit more of an interesting concept.  Will likely check it out.

Sakura Trick (Studio Deen)- Yuri, ‘nough said.  Honestly not much to get from the story synopsis.  Just a school life with 2 girls in a relationship in a school that will be shutting down.  I won’t be going out of my way for this.

Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda (A-1 Pictures)- From what information I can gather, this is about a loli that is running a secret organization bent on ruling the world.  What I can say is, “You had me at loli.”  In all seriousness, I’m having a hard time getting information on this.  Seems crazy fun and A-1 Pictures has produced a lot of shows that I have had a lot of fun watching.  So this is definitely high on my watch list.

SoniAni: Super Sonico The Animation (White Fox)- I honestly can’t decide on this one.  I’m guessing it’s a slice of life about a super idol and her misadventures.  But what can you do with this.  White Fox is not well-known yet, but have released some shows that are not to be ignored.  I will be looking int this, but not expecting a lot.

Space☆Dandy (Bones)- This show looks sort of retro in appearance.  As I stated earlier, Bones is quite a force.  I know that a lot of anticipation is surrounding this show and I will likely check it out, but don’t suspect I’ll enjoy it much.  Take it or leave it, it’s a show about a “dandy” guy in space.  Expect plenty of ecchi based on the PV.  It seems to be the audience they are going for.

Strange+ (Seven)- Slice of life centered around a teenage boy going to search for his brother that ran away.  He finds him heading a detective agency and refuses to return home.  Honestly the teen boy does not want to return himself and decides to work for the agency doing odd jobs.  I think this show can be a hit or miss.  I’ll be checking it out.

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta (TMS Entertainment)- An angry prince with revenge on the mind leaves his home knowing he would likely not be able to return.  He meets up with people who teach him about love and friendship.  Marked as an adventure and romance, so hopefully it will turn out alright.  Not expecting a lot from this based on the information I can gather.  Honestly the only thing going for it is that TMS Entertainment is working on it.  Which is a titan of an anime industry with a lot of hits and misses under their belt.

Tonari no Seki-kun (Shin-Ei Animation)- This story follows a girl who sits next to a boy that ignores her.  However he has a habit of doing extremely distracting things to his desk.  I have to admit after looking at the PV for this show, I’m extremely interested.  Also I get vibes of Jungle Wa Hale Noichi Guu (same studio).  So I’m hopefully for a similar feel.  Though on the down side, it is a different mangaka.  We will have to wait and see.

Wake Up, Girls! (Ordet)- A musical slice of life about a president of a talent agency with no more talent.  In a last-ditch effort to survive, he scouts for raw talent and finds a group of girls to work with.  This is the studio that brought us Black Rock Shooter.  I think it has what it takes to be a feel good show.  Not much more, but I’ll likely check it out.

Witch Craft Works (J.C. Staff)- This is a show that I have been most anticipating for this season.  I read a chunk of the manga and I admit I love the concept.  Looks can be deceiving however, despite everything, it’s not an ecchi manga.  I hope the show can keeps clean.  There’s plenty of material so I hope there’s no filler episodes.  J.C. Staff is another studio that is quite a force and has brought some big name titles to the front.  I am expecting a lot here.

Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil (Arms)- Watching the PV, I got strong nostalgia (artstyle and animation) of Witch Hunter Robin.  I have to say, it looks good and I think this could do well.  Now for the bad news.  I looked up the studio behind the show and got a little worried.  This is the studio that brought Queen’s Blade, La Blue Girl Returns.  Now on the up side, they also gave us Maoyu and I Wanna Be The Strongest.  Point being, this company is not afraid of fan service.  So be aware.  That being said, I have this tentatively on my watch list and hoping it doesn’t turn out bad.

Z/X IGNITION (Nippon Ichi Software)- This studio does some good work and I can’t really bash it on that account.  I will look at the show mostly because It has an interesting primus.  However I need to point out that this is a game adaptation and game adaptations that do well are a rare breed.

Shorts Series
Pupa is slated for this season along with Pupipo!, Toei Robot Girls Z

Multi Season Continuations
Silver Spoon 2nd Season (A-1 Pictures)- I will watch to continue the story but it was a slow first season.  I don’t expect the second season to be any faster paced.

Maken-Ki Two (Xebec)- Good plot, interesting characters, and highly fanserviced.  I will be watching since the first season left a lot of unfinished story.

Saki: Zenkoku-hen (Studio Gokumi)- A continuation of the show that dramatizes Majiong.  It’s a so-so show.  I will probably watch it for fun.
