Episode 18 Impressions: Log Horizon

Things are really ramping up in the virtual massively multiplayer online role-playing game Elder Tale.  The game that has over thirty thousand gamers trapped in a digital world.  As Shiroe has finally established his new guild and met with the People of the Land (NPCs), they are already met with a troubling issue of twenty thousand goblins threatening the lands and people who inhabit it.

e18horizon2The princess of League of Freedom Cities Lenessia Erhart Cowen has traveled back to Akihabara with Shiroe and his companions to attempt to request aid from the adventurers to fight the goblins.  After setting up an elaborate stage, Shiroe and Crusty leave it to the princess to ask for aid herself.  The adventurers are stricken with awe at her beauty and grace so it comes as no surprise that they jump at the opportunity to tackle the quest.

Shiroe takes command as the tactician which comes as no surprise, while Crusty takes the lead of the military force.  While the princess is worried that her actions will be frowned upon by the League of Freedom and her grandfather, she takes it upon herself to charge into battle alongside the adventurers.

While most of the episode is taken by the grand speech by Cowen, it was definitely an inspiring show.  Being from a background of MMO playing, it was quite comical to see the adventurers jumping at the idea of finally having a quest to partake in.  Being as they haven’t had “Flags” or “Quest NPCs” since being trapped in the new Elder Tale.  Though in the end it was a rather uneventful experience, but rather more character build for Cowen.

That said, episode 19 is looking to be quite the follow-up.  It looks to be the first real engagement with the goblins since they showed up.

Episode 18: Expeditionary Force

Good build up

  • Good character build for Cowen
  • Clever use of MMO elements
  • Cowen’s change didn’t turn ecchi

  • Relatively uneventful
  • Some pointless exchanges

Well some of this political postioning can get a little tiresome, which in the begenning was great to see Shiroe’s plan come together in the purchase of the Guild Hall, and cleaning up Akihabara, I am still holding out for more moments like this.I just hope we get to see, umm I forget the girls name that Shiroe had interest in from his previous guild, in game, and the dynamic that will play between him and Ninjaloli, wow sorry I am bad with names today. Think we need to balance out some of the screen time to battle and maybe less Glasses posturing. Maybe.

Couldn’t agree more! I can not believe I completely forgot about the ‘love interest’ from the previous expansion. Though I don’t think you’re in the wrong as I believe they never mentioned her name. We just get countless visions of her without a mention if I’m correct.

Akatsuki (ninjaloli sounds better) has definitely gone to the way-side in the last few episodes. Mainly because she says she doesn’t understand anything. Though she seems like a great character if they would just put her on the field.
