Episode 20 Impressions: Sword Art Online II

Asuna has always taken the side line to Kirito’s spotlight hogging, but not anymore.  As the Sleeping Knights come to Asuna for an important task, she will soon have to draw her sword and take the front stage for the first time.

Yuuki’s guild, the Sleeping Knights, are all gathered to introduce themselves to Asuna.  Jun, Talken, Nori, Siune, Tecchi, and of course Yuuki the guild leader.  Their plea is simple, yet seemingly impossible.  They desire Asuna to help them defeat a floor boss with just the 7 of them.  Something that would normally take a raid of 49.

Their reason is because they want their name put on the boss defeat board.  Their reason for not joining a full raid to do so is that the board only reflects the leader’s party.  Doing the boss with just the 7 of them would ensure they could be immortalized on that board.

While Asuna fights with her old mentality of survival and avoiding death, she quickly snaps out of it and agrees to help.  Much to the Sleeping Knights joy.  Though things don’t remain joyous for e20swordartonlineii05Asuna as she is soon forcefully disconnected from the game by her mother who warns her that she will disconnect her for good if she misses yet another dinner.

Once back in the game on a later night, Asuna joins up with the Sleeping Knights to hunt down the next floor’s boss.  However the boss doesn’t seem to be their biggest challenge as they soon find that leading guilds are using their attempts to weed out boss tactics.

Hopefully this show won’t be as predictable as I think it will. We’ve already foreshadowed Asuna’s mother unplugging her during a boss fight. As well as foreshadowed Yuuki probably being terminally ill and bedridden. I say this because Kirito has stated that she “lives in the world” and that they have a mere season to get done what they need to do. What other reason would they have to be so passionate about this goal?

e20swordartonlineii09That said, even if these foreshadowings are correct (and Light Novel readers need not respond), I don’t think it will have an effect on anything. It’s a great arc and I’m enjoying it a lot. Especially exploring Asuna, the arranged marriage, her future, and her relations with her mother.

It’s unfortunate that it won’t last long with the season coming to an end. The other unfortunate aspect is that I believe Kirito’s absence is partly why it succeeds so well. Moving away from him allows so many other characters to take the spotlight for a change. Leading to some great progression for Asuna in this case.  Hopefully this happens again in future arcs.

Of course, I have to admit that Kirito’s appearance was pretty epic. Which is another reason why his absence is so great. It leads to a good build up to his return.
